The weather over here is starting to heat up, and what a better way to have a fun afternoon distraction and fun treat than a malt! But, one that is secretly nourishing their little bodies while they enjoy them.
So at first I made these for the kids, but I poured the rest from the blender into two cups for Andrew and I. Oh my goooooosh.
I ran outside with Andrew’s and said, super nonchalant, “The kids and I just stopped at Wendy’s, we saved you some frosty, so here is it in a cup,” and handed it to him. Chalk it up to tasting research. Once he tried it, he said it was actually better than a Frosty, and I think it is too, more flavorful, just a creamy. Sort of addicting, but made with only healthy ingredients that help our bodies.
So, only real, whole food going into it that is nutritious for your body, no added sugar or gut-bomb dairy. Stomach friendly and easy to make. Save yourself the drama of ‘going out for ice cream’ that ends up a sticky, tearful mess, or is that just my kids?
They LOVE this one so much more.

To make, just throw these ingredients into a blender, and pour into cups or dishes.
Ingredients:
-2 frozen bananas
-6-7 dates (that’s where the sweetness comes from)
-1/2 cup almond milk
-1/2 tablespoon vanilla
-1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
-1/4 cup walnuts or almonds
-1 cup ice
-chocolate syrup or chocolate chips or cocoa powder to taste depending on how chocolaty you like it

Put everything in the blender. If you want it more malt-ish that you could drink with a straw, add more almond milk, if you want it more thick and ice-cream-ish, cut down the milk and add more ice.

Blend. And Breathe in, and you’re done!

We had a little friend over who is sort of picky and when she was done she said, “Sooooo good!” Little did she know her little body was being so nourished 😉
Thumbs up all around. My only mistake was not making more for myself.

If you try it, leave me a comment and let me know what you think! I love hearing about trying our recipes and trying now things for their families.

It sounds really good, but I absolutely cannot stand bananas and now I’m going wild trying to come up with a viable alternative. Apples, maybe? Not sure they’d have the right texture.
Have you thought about trying plantains? I hate bananas too but have loved fried plantains. They don’t have the same sickly sweet nauseating taste (can you tell I really hate bananas? lol)
Good call on plantains! I wouldn’t have thought of that
If you don’t enjoy bananas, perhaps avacado?
I tried this tonight, but I didn’t have any chocolate chips or dates. Peanut M&Ms did the trick! Mark and I both loved it. Thanks for the recipe!
I need some smoothie help! This recipe should have worked but it didn’t at all. I put in two frozen bananas, all the dates we had (7…8…9 I forget but more than required because I wanted to finish them), coconut milk instead of almond milk, cinnamon, chocolate and a slew of ice. I had to skip the vanilla as it is a rarity in our country and my preschooler ate all the almonds while I wasn’t looking but it still should have worked.
Instead of tasty results we got sour slime. Any guesses why it all went wrong? I so want to make this recipe work because it’s summer here and I could so use a frosty right now.
