Orange Creamsicle Spirulina Smoothies

Today we made our first Spirulina smoothies for mid-morning snack, AND I think we’re hooked.  The boys held their little cups way up,  heads tilted as far back as they could go, urging the last few drops to tickle down to them.  They have this sort of beautiful blue green color, but tastes like a sweet orange creamsicle, which is one of our favorite flavors of all time!  You know, like an orange julius?  Remember those things you would get on your way to Wet Seal at the mall back in the day?

Meaning, they’re really good and don’t taste all healthy–but DELISH!  Plus, Spirulina is really good for you, so is everything else we’re adding.

“Who wants to make green smoothies!?”

“ME!” they shout as they throw down toys and run over.  They both grab the bench together and pull it, scraping along the floor to get up where they need to be.

“Go pick some kale first,” our front garden is a few feet from the kitchen, and they come back with  yanked kale, mostly holding together, and resume their spots.

This was the first time using orange oil in a smoothie, even just one drop gave it such a sweet, rich flavor.

Make sure to pour some for yourself, too.  Mama’s gotta take care of themselves and their bodies, too.

These eight essential amino acids are found in Spirulina:

  • ISOLEUCINE: Required for optimal growth, intelligence development and nitrogen equilibrium in the body Used to synthesize other non-essential amino acids.
  • LEUCINE: Stimulator of brain function, increases muscular energy levels.
  • LYSINE: Building block of blood antibodies, strengthens circulatory system and maintains normal growth of cells.
  • METHIONINE: Vital lipotropic (fat and lipid metabolizing) amino acid that maintains liver health. An anti-stress factor, it calms the nerves.
  • PHENYLALANINE : Required by the thyroid gland for production of thyroxine which stimulates metabolic rate.
  • THREONINE: Improves intestinal competence and digestive assimilation.
  • TRYPTOPHANE: Increases utilization of B vitamins, improves nerve health and stability of the emotions. Promotes sense of calm.
  • VALINE): Stimulates mental capacity and muscle coordination.

Spirulina is approximately 65 to 71 percent protein, depending on growing conditions. These proteins are biologically complete, which means they provide all eight essential amino acids in the proper ratios. Furthermore, spirulina provides all the required amino acids in a form that is easier to digest than meat or soy protein.” -source
