Pumpkin Night

What month is it?  Just kidding.

Mandatory Pumpkin photos, am I right?

Each year our real estate agent rents out Bates Nut Farm and has a party there at night.  It was such a special treat because that place is usually packed with people.  Us San Diegans try to wear ‘warm clothes’ in the fall, but then it ends up being a cool 99 degrees so all the kids are sweating in the pictures under the sun with sweaters.

But in the evening, it was nice.  We could take our time.  The boys tried to be brave feeding the goats, but the grains turned to confetti shooting into the air when the goat’s tongue touched the palms of their hands as they shrieked in laughter.

There was a BBQ food catering service, so naturally Maria ate two huge BBQ sandwiches, two servings of salad, 3 helpings of beans and coleslaw.  Growing girl.

There were lawn games out, face painting and Anna and Elsa blowing balloons with lots of kids and families.  It kind of had the feel of living in a cute small town somewhere with normal seasons.

Frozen was playing, much to the kids delight, and they each got a snowflake painted on their cheeks, Elijah a snowman.  Elijah would not look Elsa in the eye, and held Finley’s hand the entire time Anna painted it on, refusing to look at her either.  Clammed up in front of his main girls, who would have thought?

Ok, so I am going to take this pumpkin post and write a little note to myself of a couple of the sweet things they have said at this stage in their lives:

Each day, Finley says, “Mama, you are beautiful and cute!  Beautiful and cute mama!”  Sometimes, he will follow up, “Mama, I will call you flower because you are beautiful and cute…and flower, and kind and SMART!!!”

He does not hold back with his words of affirmation.  Then, sometimes he says, “Ok, now you tell me about my smart…” and wants kind words back, hee hee.

The other day I met a gal who said, “Oh you’re Finley’s mom?”  No one had ever referred to me that way before, but I told her yes.  She said she worked in his Sunday school room, which surprised me she would know him since there are about 45 kids in his class.

“Yes, I know him, he was always such a good listener and kind and funny, and I told my husband I was so sad when he moved up to the next room.”  I told her that was the kindest compliment I’ve ever received.

Elijah loves going to Speech Therapy twice a week.  The other day I picked him up after his 30 minute session, “Mama, I love my teacher.”

“Awww, you do, that’s so sweet.  What do you love about her?”

“She has keys….unlock the door.”

“Wow, do you wish you had your own keys?”

“Yeah….”

Elijah is going to be the best daddy.  He loves all things babies and taking care of them.  His favorite two right now are a turquoise stuff kitty and a teddy bear.  Every day we hear, “WAIT!!  My babies!” and he wraps them up and shoves them under his arms, or into a backpack.  Sometimes I wonder if his obsession with baby care stems from his early days of being in an orphanage.

All Maria says all day long is so cute, and sweet and thoughtful.  I hold myself back from writing it all down because it would give you a tooth ache from the sweetness.  She is genuine and pure in her thoughts and motives in all things.

“When I grow up, I am going to have my own farm, with horses.  And all the people will have to pay $5 to ride them, but my family is free!”

“Mom, I’m trying to feel how I’m blinking!!”

“Mama, I just like helping, everyone!”
