An almost magical day, until I traumatized my children

Today we had a real life magical afternoon.  Our days can be pretty great, but today took the cake.  Well, until I decided to traumatize my children and we all ended in tears.

First off, Maria and I did a yoga video, it was fun and as relaxing as a massage, our muscles were like, “Um, yes.” We put lavender oil on our wrists, it felt a little euphoric.  I was so proud of how well she did, even Finley joined in at times.

She asked to make our own pickles, and I said, “YES!” we had just gotten fresh cucumbers.  We boiled jars, she did the slicing.  We had just received our Elevation oil that morning, the joyful blend and we were high on joy, zero percent after-nap-witching-hour.  The boys made a parade with recorders, we read books and they ate tomatoes that I had intended for dinner, but was happy just the same to see them eaten as snack.  Our lovely neighbor came over with fresh cookies for us and to hear about Serenity for sleeping, and we joyfully shared our oils.

It was a magical day.

Things could not have been better, a peaceful Friday night.  Andrew is still working on the big project, so during dinner I said that for a special treat, we’d watch a movie!!! We’ve had movie nights less than fingers on my hands, so it was BIG.  I chose Dumbo.

Which was a mistake–decision that caused the trauma.

Well at first, we were all about that stork, dropping precious bundles of animal babies to the mommies.  And when Mama Elephant finally got her baby, we cheered, “HURRAY!”

“That like mama and ‘Lijah,” Elijah told me when they cuddled, “That’s right,” I told him.

Fast forward to the mommy locked up in jail, stretching, trying to reach her baby with the tip of her trunk, the baby crying at the touch of his mommy, and everyone started crying, “WAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“Mom, that’s how I felt with no mom,” Maria told me.

“That’s how I felt when you were in jail!!!!” Finley told me.

They all looked in horror at the scene, the baby leaving alone, to be made fun of.  I was crying too.  “Hold me mama!” the boys wailed, “I’m sad!”  I couldn’t even hear them, that poor elephant!  This is why we don’t have tv, I thought to myself.

Magic gone.

“Flipping DUMBO!  SO SAD!!!”

“I feel sad, mama,” they each told me.  They crawled in my lap and cried, “Why are we watching this!?”

But, luckily, that sweet little mouse was the hero.

“Guys, that’s what we need to be, the circus mouse.  We need to find the ones all alone and forgotten and tell them, “Yes you can!  You can do it, I see you, and you are important to me!”

“Ok mama,” they told me.

“You guys can be my little circus mice, helping the ones that get left out?”

“Yes mama,” they told me.

“Until you go back to jail, mama,” Finley decided.

Fair enough.

Um, right after our adoption was when Tangled was released. My sweet little girls were terrified that someone would kidnap them and give them to a foster family like their new siblings. Disney movies have never been the same to me since I’ve seen them with new eyes.

My son is 7 and has watched less than 10 ‘childrens movies’. He HATES Despicable Me because at the start the girls are in the orphanage. The day that we watched it, that night I found him crying in his bed, that those little girls had no one to love them and the mean lady made them sit in a box all alone. WHO WRITES THIS STUFF?! So many Disney/Pixar movies are actually terrifying and incredibly sad. We stick to the comedies – Shrek, Madagascar and The Aristocats.

One of my best friends in high school was the son of one of the top Disney animators. I think he was even one of the leads in developing the character of Dumbo, and would have considered that movie a highlight of his career. Frank Thomas was a genius storyteller, and a kind and generous man. 🙂 I think he would say a good story requires some adversity and conflict to stay relevant and interesting. That was the genius of the Disney team, they took cartoons, and told movie length stories. I love Amy’s response of finding a positive lesson to take away from the dispair. Frank would have been very gratified that someone saw the lesson in the darker theme. There are many things in life that we can’t influence, but how we respond is always our choice. Thank you Amy 🙂
