Why we love Essential Oils and Cleaned out our Medicine Cabinet

There is something that my family loves that I want to share.  I have mentioned it many times, just not by name, in my blogs.

Once, about how we were one of the only families not to get sick while visiting the baby houses in Russia, even though we were kissing their snotty faces.

Another time about finding the just right cure for our J to get a good, peaceful night’s sleep.

If my kids are tired, but restless and can’t find sleep, our perfect secret.  THE REASON my boys take LONG, simultaneous naps–which is priceless, our life blood if I am being honest. (Moms of multiple toddlers rejoice!)  Which I suppose it the reason I can even put two words together to blog once in a while, or sweep a crumb.  Good naps, there is just no price for that in a home…

For a couple years now, we have been using Essential Oils.  We heard about it from family, and sort of thought it was either too good to be true, or not actually potent–probably both.

But overtime and with continued use, and more and more people learning and using and raving about oils and how it helps their children, cures them and aids their ailments and pains, being all natural, smell amazing and made from plants–we now believe in it.  We love them.  Game changers.

Our friends told us about it being a medicine cabinet make-over, and instead of stuffing our bodies with strange colored toxins that only subdue symptoms while we stay sick, we could cure ourselves with aromatic compounds found in seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants.

As consumers are becoming more educated these days, and are looking for more natural healing, and less chemicals, especially for our kids, people are rediscovering what has been used throughout history.  As we are getting into it, there is one for everything, I am shocked at what they can do.  Some have powerful cleansing properties and are naturally antimicrobial.  Their unique structure allows them to pass directly through the skin for immediate response.  (what!?)

They are very concentrated and will last you a very long time.  They smell incredible, I mean really, incredible.  They lift moods as they heal and work their magic.

Magic is the term Andrew and I joke with when we use them, like we are Harry Potter and Hermione, with instant results.  It’s strange.  And amazing.  And that’s why I am sharing.

While J was here, poor thing snored so loudly.  We didn’t know how to help her, and Maria couldn’t sleep.  After two days, we tried the essential oil called, Breathe.  We had only used it in the past as a better, incredible alternative to Vicks Vapor Rub (which has petroleum!), and she was slept silent.  Sleeping like a baby after I put it on her chest that same night.  I think it was that moment, more than the rest, that I realized the power of essential oils, an instant,  audible difference.  I am sure even our neighbors were thanking us for using Breathe for J 😉  The added benefit of it being so simple, natural yet profoundly powerful.  Maria was so, so happy, both girls got such good rest.  And we all know, rested children are happy children 😉  You can find it here under Oil Blends category, it will last so, so long, and bring so much relief to anyone who needs to just breathe and find rest. It might blow your mind, like magic.  We put it on our kids if they are stuffed up, and I see them breath a big, clear breath when I do.  (Which is bliss)

I want to highlight a couple more oils that we swear by in the first little intro, although I would love to share many!  Here are the other two we carry with us all the time:

The reason we didn’t get sick in Russia?  On Guard.  Oh, but we started to.  We felt it, about day three, a tickle in our throats as they started getting stickier and harder to swallow, “Oh no, we can’t!” we knew.

Andrew pulled out the On Guard from his mom, we applied one touch, one tiny drop to the bottoms of our feet at night, and we woke up healthy.  Fine.  No soar throat.  We kept applying it each night after that, we felt fantastic.  Well enough to have physical and emotional energy to the final days at the orphanage, for the flight home, and for returning home with our sweet Finn.  So very thankful.  Great addition to any travel bag anywhere.  They are tiny and travel well, and being sick away from home is really just the worst.

Find it here: Under “Oil Blends”

On Guard is dōTERRA®’s unique, proprietary blend formulated to support healthy immune function. Wild orange essential oil, combined with clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary offer a fragrant, natural and effective alternative to synthetic options for immune support. On Guard, with its unique aroma, is one of our most versatile blends. It is also safe to use on counter tops, as a non-toxic way to cleanse surfaces, or to purify the atmosphere by diffusing.”

Side benefit, scent is the strongest link to memory, so each time we use it here, it’s like we’re back at the Vlad Motor Inn.

THIS IS A BIG ONE!!  Mom, you will want to mail me a hug.  You’re welcome in advance:

If my boys need sleep, and they just need it, but they are crazy, or riling each other up, or missed their nap window, and it’s too late for a nap, but they are miserable…and everyone needs peace, and…

Ok, well, it’s called Serenity--if I could give this as a gift to all new moms, I would.

I have friends who’s children need to take regular trips to the hospital or doctor, and Serenity is the first thing added to their bag, it’s so soothing and calming.  With one drop touched to the bottom of little feet, everyone is peaceful, sleeping. (SLEEPING!!!)  I don’t even need to say anything more than that.  Because it’s what everyone wants.  And it’s just oils, not some weird, creepy things you are putting in their bodies.  The main ingredient is lavender, which smells glorious.

Serenity, hallelujah.

Find it in the “Oil Blends” category.

Stress is a major contributor to illness and disease, in fact, it is estimated that more than 90% of all visits to health care professionals are related to stress. Serenity is a blend composed of individual oils with known calming properties which create a sense of well-being and relaxation. Lavender, sweet marjoram, roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood and vanilla bean create a subtle aroma ideal for aromatic diffusion or topical application. Applied to the bottom of the feet at bedtime, dōTERRA®’s Serenity is an excellent way to promote restful sleep. Added to a warm bath Serenity creates the perfect escape with its peaceful, renewing fragrance.”

If this is your first time hearing about essential oils, I understand if it sounds crazy.  It’s one of those things you think won’t actually work, until the first time you try, then you are in love, so thankful.

The term you will use it, “Like magic,” cause that’s how it feels.

There are many more oils, some I have yet to discover myself.  I know many, many people already love and use essential oils, leave a comment and tell me which ones you love and why!  I would so love that.

The reason I took the time to write about this today was that I recently became a seller, so as you purchase, it will also support our adoption of little C, you can shop from any of the links I provided and it will help our adoption.

Essential oils are great for moms looking for safe, natural remedies for their children and their families.  Careful though–you’ll end up loving them.  The process of applying them is enjoyable, real essential oils are beyond compare to scent, and scent is the greatest link to memory.

If you are looking for a great three to start with and see what it’s all about, we love these three, SO MUCH!!!  We are chucking old, crusty capped bottles of ‘medicine’ left and right 🙂

Enjoy!  Email me if you have questions.

Share what you love, I’d love to hear.

Love,

Amy

What’s your favorite essential oil and why?!

Thank you so much! The links go to the page that the specific oil is featured on, you can purchase them and others from that page!

Thanks again and enjoy! Have you used Essential Oils before?

  • Crystal June 15, 2014, 10:32 pm

Amy, I live at an APO and am trying to order. I select “APO Shipping” as the ship method, but then it says “APO/FPO/DPO addresses can only be shipped through APO/FPO/DPO Shipping. Please select APO/FPO/DPO Shipping as the ship method.” Even though that’s exactly what I did! What do I do? Can you help?

      We’re looking into it now!

I’ve been using these amazing oils for a year now and can’t begin to tell you all of the things it has taught me. Listening to my body and actually having something to help has been life changing. If you haven’t tried their toothpaste yet…you just have too. Plaque gone! Like the hygienist has nothing to scrape. And none of the unreadable ingredients you find in store bought toothpaste. Lavender oil instead of Aloe Vera for burns. Crazy how fast and complete it works! Peppermint and lemongrass for headaches and the list could go on forever! I find so much inspiration from your family. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    • tinyteam June 16, 2014, 9:28 pm

RIGHT!? I know, we are really loving them. I think I may have to try that tooth paste, sounds amazing, not surprised, though 🙂

  • Melissa June 16, 2014, 2:38 pm

Did you use them at all when you were pregnant? I’d love to figure out if any of them help with nausea/ backaches/ other common pregnancy symptoms!

    • tinyteam June 16, 2014, 9:30 pm

Hi Melissa! Lemon is very inexpensive and would help with nausea.

Serenity would be nice to have on hand too, third trimester is known for sleepless nights! I would be night for the calming effects during labor, too.

For back aches, lavender and peppermint and sandalwood are supposed to be amazing!

Sometimes I would just smell the lemon and feel better.

I am so sorry you are feeling sick!

  • Laura June 25, 2014, 3:50 pm

    Amy,
I love these doterra oils! I was VERY skeptical about how effective they would be prior to using them, but I am a true believer now! My favourites are On Guard (it is totally like magic!), Breathe and the Lemon. I love them for cleaning too, I don’t use any harsh cleaners anymore.
Next time I need some new oils, I will for sure order from you, and give your name to anyone else I know looking to buy. Good luck with your fundraising, I will keep your family in my prayers. xo L.

I love this post, please do another like this again:) I’ve recently been learning more about oils after a friend offered peppermint oil which quickly reduced the pain of a migraine–truly amazing! When we can make the investment for these products I’ll shop through ya.

Amy- any suggestions for the aches and pains from Lyme disease? My 14 year old daughter has been suffering for 9 mos. Coconut and garlic oils have been recommended. We are treating homeopathically but aches and pains in joints are a big symptom/problem.

(PS. We are distant family. My mom and Andrew’s mom (Patty) are cousins. 🙂

I love doterra! Onguard & serenity are our favorites around here, too. I love lemon in my water. And their toothpaste is awesome!

  • Jeanette Cloakey July 23, 2014, 9:59 pm

Oh. My. Goodness. Serenity all the way!!! My sweet Sofia has always been a “late to bed, early to rise” kind of girl. Serenity has helped calm her down in the evening and get here into a more regular routine. Deep Blue has worked wonders for all of our little aches and pains. Oh, and can I get a hallelujah for homemade teething gel with Clove oil?! It’s incredible what it’s done for our tiny teether! Those incoming molars are intense and Sofia gets instant relief with the Clove oil. So yeah, EO’s rock!

This post inspired me to pick up some essential oils and even though I just got them home 30 minutes ago, I am amazed! I accidentally burned my arm getting something out of the oven and was it was THROBBING… that is, until I looked up which oil helps with burns and applied it (lavender) (it worked immediately!). Just put some drops into a scentsy with some water and my house is already smelling great! 🙂 I will order the oils from the links next time, didn’t realize that it would help with the adoption (duh!) until I read the comments!
