Wahoo! Dental Success!

The Philippines is a very jovial, happy, joking culture.  I had made a promise to J, if she could do her third and final dental visit with no tears, we would get her the Princess Anna doll.  After screaming and crying through her 2 hour root canal a few days prior, I wasn’t sure what she would say.

“Ok!” she said, then pointed at herself, laughing, “Me, tita, ‘AHHH!  Help, Tita Amy!’ acting out her crying with a big smile on her face.  Most kids I know would feel totally shell shocked by the experience, but here she was, days later, joking about it.

“No,” I told her, “It was more like this, AHHHHHHHH!  HELP!!! AHHHHHH!!!” I acted out, waaaay closer to the actual drama, while she and all the other kids cracked up.

On the way to the dentist, I prepped her, “Well, it’s going to be short, real quick, so don’t get too comfortable, we’ll be out of there in no time…”

“Oh nooo….” she would start saying as we got closer, clutching her cheek, “Ouchy, oh no, ouchy, OUCHY!!”

“No.” I told her, “Nope, no crying.”

“Haha, ok!” she’d smile.

She was nervous when she walked in, but hopped up with a smile.

Family Dental of San Marcos donated all of the extensive dental work for free.  That night they did two fillings, gave her sealants and finally extracted the ogre of a rotten tooth, incredible.

And…

all without a single tear from J, thumbs up the entire time from her, “I did it!”

When she was done, we all cheered, including J.  She hugged the staff for changing her life forever.  We started packing up, ready to head to target, but then, Linzey headed in back and surprised us all, she had gotten the Princess Anna doll for her, waiting for her because she knew she would do amazingly!

“ANNA!!!!” J exclaimed.  “I LOVE HER!!!” ( Best dentist office, ever.)

I was totally shocked too.  She said it was the last one they had, so thankful that she was able to receive just the one she had her heart set on.Photo 5

They even let her go into the toy box at the office, and she picked out a toy for Elijah, Finley and one for Maria, too.Photo 6The dentist told us she would be super sore the next day, and to give her IB Profin and Motrin, and to call them if we needed more.  The next day she woke up, hopped out of bed, and for the first time in what was probably a very long time, had a real apple, ate the whole thing without a problem!

“Does it hurt?” I asked her, “Do you want some medicine?”

“Ouchy?  NO!  It’s great!” she thumbs upped.

Shoot, if I had a root canal, fillings and an extraction, I know I would be hurting for some help, but she is as happy as a clam!  SO joyful!

You guys, not going to lie…thinking about her teeth, and how happy she is, and how much we were able to accomplish dental wise, and seeing her eat hard foods, and thinking about what this will mean for her life, it’s so amazing, it’s just the BEST!

Thank you San Marcos Family dental for such a HUGE, amazing gift!
