Folding Clothes

Folding little white tights with pink butterflies.  Yet another stripped flannel footy pajamas.  Folding each little item, there are more these days.

And I remember.

There will come a day, and a day not too far off, when I will no longer be folding little pairs of pants, a pink sweater.  That the time my children spend with me under our roof is quick, and soon my hands will have no little clothes to fold.

And what I can now hold in my hands, I will only be able to hold in my heart.   I may be a young mom, but when I live the length of my life just one more time, I will be close to 60, a new chapter.  I will have the lives that my children will live, the convictions in their heart, out in this world.  The seeds that we planted, the words we chose, the time we spent, the hugs, the grace we gave, the sacrifice, the more, the oh so much more will be dwelling within the hearts of these ones that God chose to allow within our homes, to light a fire within the hearts of their parents.

My prayer as a parent is as we teach them to run, and to thrive and learn and grow, that we don’t accidentally lead them to believe that their ultimate goal is themselves.  That we would raise up children who use their hands to help this hurting world, the amount of people who so long for a touch, a relief, help of any kind.  May my children run while throwing off their fears, flying off their shoulders behind them, being lead by a God who longs to use each of us.  To be so satisfied in the love of  God who is so desperately in love with them, that the counterfeit, the selfish, the dangerous love offered to them from so many sources will be cast aside as they burst forth.  A fledgling taking flight.

And so, as I fold, may I remember.

May I choose to open the word with them when I feel like putting on Dora.  May I pray with my daughter on the way to school when I want to listen to the radio.  Laughter when I feel like resting.  Chosing to invest.  Chose to help others, to extend our arms even when our home feels full.

And folding.  With thankfulness.

//My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

Glory to God in the church!
Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus!
Glory down all the generations!
Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!//

Amen! So obvious, and yet so hard to discipline ourselves to actually do!

And all the people of the church said, “Amen”. Thank you for reminding even those of us closer to 60, what is really important.
