Painting a Mural

“Look for a Baskin Robbins in the shopping center,” she told us.

We scanned and scanned, and finally found the ice cream shop, but surely there was no preschool in here.  Everything else was so run down, the store fronts were either out of business, or so old that they only appeared that way.

A laundromat, a vacant room, a thrift store, oh, there’s the preschool, wedged between.

We were greeted by Abbi who is a part of a non-profit that runs a community garden and has 7 low income preschools.  Research shows that children who go to preschool are less likely to go to prison.  Children who go to preschool are more likley to go to college.  So college over prison, all because of preschool.  There is income verification, so the ones who go here are extremely poor.

Finley and Abbie

We debated leaving Finley at home, but decided to bring him and see.

“Wait, what’s this place called?!?!   This is the coolest place ever!  When do I sign up!?”  -Finley

They even provided coffee for us, which was so sweet!  Look at these awesome ladies ready to get their paint on!

Getting our instructions

“This is the best day of my life…wait this isn’t real?”

We each took turns hanging out with the little ones in the leaning area.  I can’t believe how happy they were to be here.  Service projects always amaze me in all the ways the blessings come.

Some of our friends are kinda artsy so it started coming together pretty quickly.

“Hold on, mom.  I’m making music”

Angel girl

We also helped paint the walls.

A group from our church was here the weekend before doing a different painting project as well.

Multitasking

Nicole started mixing paint to make the clam awesome!

SOOOOO COOOL!

Check out Heather’s multitasking abilities with baby Bowen in the front pack!

It was so much fun, so relaxing to be painting together.  If you are local and interested in doing a service project, email me, it’s super easy to sign up.  Our church’s website has different projects all through the week.  But no matter where you live, there are so many fun ways to get involved.

“If I wasn’t here, I would just be at home, vaccuming or something, alone,” said one friend.

I can’t wait to go back and see it!  I want to bring some puppets too to replace their old nasty ones.  Anyone have and got tips on puppets?

Andrew and I have such amazing people in our lives.  How many people would wake up early on a Saturday morning and give most of it up to paint a mural in a low income preschool?

Love the mural! Love all of it, actually; the ice cream scoops to show numbers are a great idea too, if perhaps a little confusing to hopeful toddlers, lol!

I know, Ann, right? SO cute! It was so cute once you got inside, had a lot of heart. And they feed kids food from the organic community garden which is SO cool!

I know you already did your Q&A post but I am so curious to know how you find these opportunities to serve. Lately my hubby and I have really felt the Lord pressing on our hearts to get more involved in our community. I stay at home with our little one and co-lead a mommy’s Bible study. My hubby is a professor at a Christian University, along with the other things we do through our church but with all of this we feel like we are in a Christian bubble and really want to do more. We contacted a local homeless shelter and will wait to hear from them, but it looks like you guys find a lot of great opportunities to help others, and for very little money. We have extra time and love to invest but not much extra money. Your blog is always inspiring me to find ways to give back and help others.

Hi Alicia! I know how you feel! So our church has a cool community service ministry that makes it super easy to sign up a group of people on line, but some of the stuff we found and researched on our own. There is an old folks home that we visited very regularly to play bingo that was just from a google search and I called them. We’ve built some relationships over time with some other random places, always trying to see what fits best. One of the things we love best about it is how well it binds groups together. Here you are in this very new environment, usually doing things you aren’t used to, to you kind of cling to each other in new ways, all while experiencing the joy of serving, which draws you closer to God, so it’s so good all around! Some places don’t have websites, so you’ll have to stop by in person, but that’s fun too! Good lucj, and cute blog too! 🙂
      Love,
      Amy

Looks like you all had a fantastic time, and for such a worthwhile cause. As a pre-school teacher, I know only too well how short funded most pre-schools are, with the exception of the private millionaire owned ones of course, so a project like this is truly wonderful.

    Lou 🙂

Oh, I didn’t know you taught preschool! How cool, I have too! Yes, so any are very short funded, this one in particular! So glad my church is starting a new partnership with their organization to offer more long term support!
