Essential Oils for Adopted Children

These oils that I am going to tell you about have been such a drastic, life change for our family, for little bodies that just can’t calm down, or focus, or sleep due to what has happened to them that was outside our control.  And it’s not that my goal is for him to ‘Calm Down’ or ‘Just focus!’ but to participate.  To be able to participate without being plagued by his body that he can’t keep regulated, due to circumstances that aren’t his fault.

We have Elijah is specific activities, therapies to make up for some of that lost time, and before we started using the oils, he was only able to participate fully in less than 20% of what was offered.  Sometimes I felt stress watching him and whichever instructor he was dealing with, knowing he couldn’t contain himself, and that the teacher had much more work cut out for themselves trying to teach as well as behavior manage.  With the oils, he’s up to 100% most days.  And that is the heart of what I wanted for him.  Yes, it also effects our parenting in a better way because he can follow directions, we can have a more restful time of connection, because he is resting, he can enjoy life more, but those are just happy side effects.

And although we use them primarily on Elijah, we also use many of them on our biological son, our daughter, and ourselves, all with good results, just not as dramatic as with Elijah–well, sometimes they’re pretty dramatic for us, too.  Oils are very easy to use, just touch them on.

1.  Sensory Issues:  One of the worst things that happens to orphaned children comes from the very nature of an orphanage itself; neglect.  Lack of touch, sounds, movement for children in an orphanage can result in sensory processing disorders where it is difficult for children to respond to and integrate sensory messages.  Often, their bodies are working overtime to keep up with the input, resulting in what can look like ADHD symptoms.  It can have negative consequences on sleep, learning, and bonding, spilling into all areas of life with your child.

The first Essential Oil I’m going to tell you about in this Essential Oils for Adopted Children post, is for sensory help.  It calms his body, and it is visible, and instant.  I rub a drop into his chest before speech therapy, before gymnastics, and any other activity where he needs to be present and able to follow directions and absorb information.  In his heart, he wants to please, but without this help, he cannot.  When he has it on, he is calm and present.  The little boy who wants to please and participate, can.  No more swaying, hopping, moving moving moving…but calm participation.

It’s called Vetiver.  Two things; it’s very thick, this is the one oil that I had to remove the clear plastic drop stopper.  Secondly, most oils smell like bliss.  This does not.  Well, unless you are using it on a sensory child, it will soon smell like bliss to you.  Otherwise, it’s deeply earthy, like the middle of a tree.  It wasn’t my favorite smell, but it’s climbing the charts, along with any of Elijah’s teachers.  We now love this smell.

VetiverPlain

A close friend who uses it on their daughter had their child draw a picture, or try to, then put vetiver on, and draw a picture, and the two drawings, before and after are worlds apart in ability, in time spent coloring, in thoughtful work on the task.  This is an inexpensive oil, and can be used for many other things as well, yet we use it daily for Elijah with big results.  It was the day after he was kicked out of gymnastics class for tearing around the gym and being ‘unsafe’ that I bought this oil.  He hasn’t had a problem since.  A 1 hour gymnastics class, and he can sit, follow directions, stretch.  It’s not that he hadn’t wanted to, his sensory system wouldn’t allow him to.  And when he participates in gymnastics, his sensory system is being fed.  He doesn’t have to miss out.  The money I spend is not a wasted for lessons that he can’t use, because of Vetiver.

Miracles do happen…omg

Additionally, Vetiver has been said to relieve shock and trauma, and to help with muscle pain.  You can find it here for purchasing under Single Oils.

2.  Mental Focus: So now that you know our secret for body calm and sensory help, this oil is for mental focus.

InTunePlain

I usually use it in conjunction with Vetiver for Elijah, but in all honesty, I swipe it on each member of my family’s neck each morning as they walk out the door to work, school, etc.   At lunch Andrew came in pawing around for the InTune, “I need it, I have so much to do.”  I have mom friends who brings it to coffee shops on their one morning off and they need to get a lot of work done in a small window, and they blast through it.  This one smells great, and I even have a video here that I took of Finley that if I didn’t take myself, I wouldn’t even believe.  We use it for homework time for Maria, reading time for Finley, and most times for Elijah.  Definitely speech therapy times.  It’s a great natural ADD help so you’re not spending hours helping a kid on homework, or sound out words as you slowly wither away to nothing…

It works, we love it.  The roller ball bottle is awesome.  You can find it under Oil Blends here.

3. Sleep.

Some people think it’s just the ones who bring their newborns home from the hospital that suffer from lack of sleep.  But those of us who have adopted know that’s not the case.  It can be due to different reasons, being hyper vigilant of their safety due to prolonged time living in the orphanage,  sensory system not letting them rest, fear, trauma, etc.  Bodies in healing, need to rest.  Parents parenting children in healing, need to rest, but none of that is going to happen if your little one can’t calm down.  Which is terrible, let’s just say it.  I remember being up in the middle of the night, trying to rock Elijah to sleep who was close to 2 years old while he was freaking out on the outside, and I was on the inside, and Andrew had a pillow over his head, and no one was looking forward to the next day…

Which is when I found this.  The very first oil I ever bought.  The ONLY oil I have ever needed to buy a second bottle of so far…

My dear friend…

Serenity.

One drop on the bottom of the feet, especially on the bottom of the big toes, and we have sleep in our house.  You can see their bodies calm down, you’ll feel it too if you’re the one applying it.  They sleep well, long and hard.  They wake up a better kid, cause they are rested.  And rested kids are better to be around.  This also works for anxiety, and for tantrums, you can put it on their palms and have them breathe deeply into their hands.  We use it daily for naps, we don’t really need it at night.  When children are rested, they can learn better, they eat better, they have better temperaments, and their bodies function healthier–all crucial things when we are talking about bonding.

4.  All the Feelings:  I keep this one in my purse; anxiety, attention deficit, hyperactivity, mood swings, etc.

You’re freaking out?  You’re acting crazy?  You can’t calm down?  You got some highs and lows right now?  I will put this on you, one drop between my two fingers rubbed behind the ears.

Then we will have some PEACE!   Rids feelings of anger and is very consoling.

BalanceWords

If it’s a house full of crazies, I diffuse it.  It smells good.  Andrew will walk in, smelling big, “Oh wow!  What are you diffusing?” as they boys are playing calmly,

“It’s called, ‘Don’t be a physco’ oil.'”  This isn’t just for adopted kids, after naps Finley needs this more than anyone.

This is a great oil to use if you adopted a little one for a bad orphanage and they are struggling with a lot of fear, trauma, mood swings as they are trying to settle into their lives.  A good activity it to place a couple drops in some play dough, and have the child work with it.  It will be some calm, sensory input while experiencing the oils.  Moms, put it in your baths.  I put it on stuffed animals during play times, and their play is calm and nurturing.

You can find it under Oil Blends here.

5.  Moods:  Elevation–this one is good for an anxious child, withdrawn, sad, discouraged, lethargic–sad.  This is one of my all time favorite oils.  It’s the joyful blend, and it works.  I diffuse it when we have guests over so everyone can’t help but feel very happy to be here 🙂  I put it on sleepy boys when they wake up from naps to skip over the witching hour.  I have shared it with friends suffering from depression and use it on my chest for a pick-me-up.

The kids love it, it’s hard not to.

ROLLER BALLS!

I made these roller ball oils the other day during nap time, I LOVE THEM!  They are a mix of a variety of oils for a specific purpose mixed with fractionated coconut oil.  You can stash them in a car, purse, wherever and roll it onto skin whenever.

WE.  LOVE.  them.

RollerBalls

-FLU BOMB which is a potent mix of 5 different oils including Oregano, OnGuard, Frankincense, Lemon, and Melaleuca.  I roll it on my kids feet, and bring it everywhere, especially when there is a poor mama who’s kids just can’t get well.

-Liquid Xanax which I first made for a friend doing a presentation who was beside herself with worry, and she KILLED it!  (Minor sweating, but great presentation in front of a crowd, go girl!  It brought out her best).  This is probably my most popular roller ball, works on nervous kids and adults–as the name implies 🙂

-Liquid Ambien easy application of Serenity, Cedar wood and Vetiver, EACH alone with good sleeping power, and mixed–goodnight.  Drug free, obviously, so you wake up feeling great.

-Super Hero Oil is something I use often on Finley.  Oregano is one of the most powerful oils for immunity, but there are also studies showing that it helps with fear.  It is considered a ‘hot’ oil, meaning it has to be diluted with fractioned coconut oil or another carrier oil prior to application to skin, which is why I put it in the roller with a carrier oil, ready to roll on at anytime.  Finley is my more shy and sensitive child, and while Elijah will run into a new situation, or class, or activity, Finley clings to me.  Recently during karate, the class is going, and he’s missing out because he wants to be right by me….

“Finley, do you want your Super Hero oil?” I ask after bribing with every known good thing.  “Yes,” and I roll is on his feet, and he runs out, making tiny pin drop foot prints out onto the mat.

-Allergy Oil a mix of lemon, peppermint and lavender.  I don’t have allergies, but those who do swear by it.

-Muscle Soother roller ball

You can purchase any of these Oil Roller Balls for $18.  I can also create custom made roller balls for you if there is a recipe you have in mind, I have the materials.

For a special feature, I am giving away any roller ball of your choice for any adoptive family who wishes to use essential oils as a fundraiser for their adoption.  You would get a purchasing link to be able to share with friends and family for purchasing oils, and sales go to you.  If you are interested in having oils as one of your fundraisers, we have loved being a part of it, of sharing this goodness to families, all while supporting our child coming home.  Email me if this is something you are interested in and tell me which roller ball you would like.

Do you dilute the oils? I have been doing a lot of reading on oils and it says to be very careful for kids under 6 and to always dilute. Any tips?

    • tinyteam February 4, 2015, 8:48 pm

Some of them I do dilute, and some I don’t. We’ve been using them for a while so we’re familiar with the ones that work best. The only one I am VERY careful to dilute is Oregano oil which I put into a roller ball with fractionated coconut oil 🙂

I use oils for sleep as well. 7 years of sleepless nights caused by stress and anxiety has been blown away by using lavender and other “restful” blends! I tried melatonin, ambien, nyquil…you name a drug and I tried to use it for sleep. Nothing has helped me sleep as deeply as essential oils. Little coconut oil with some lavender on my feet and I’m OUT. So awesome. Can’t imagine how it helps this littles with sleep as well!!

    • tinyteam February 4, 2015, 9:11 pm

Yay! So happy you found it! Oils are so powerful 🙂
