“I think that’s Dada”

“Mama…when I was sad in Russia, no one ever asked me why I was sad.  But now if I feel sad, you and Daddy always ask me if I am sad, and it makes me feel so good.”

“No one ever asked you how you were feeling?”

“No…just like, go to bed.  But now, I can always feel good.”

Hold up…someone was called up in front of her whole school to win an award.  She won for effort, because no matter what she is doing in school, she loves it.  She is eager to learn, and thankful that someone is teaching her.  Rocking it!

Our awesome adoption friends sent Maria some new clothes, and they were to die for, we couldn’t handle it.  On the note she said Maria would look like a Lady who Lunches, and doesn’t she?

(Moments like these that I know I would have felt so silly if I hadn’t sent all of her mostly too small clothes along with Jonalyn to her orphanage, you know what I mean?  Such small windows in life, our lives that are only about one minute anyways.)

Thank you Sherry and fam!  xo

Hmmm, there may need to be some sort of intervention here….

I am pretty sure Maria thinks her parents are on LSD.

Don’t worry, we hung it up.

Say a little prayer for our littlest.  He had his first night spending the night at grandmas with brother and sister there too, but I think it shook him up a bit.  Poor little muffin just has a thing where he wants his parent around all the time and deep in his soul, doesn’t like to be left.

Two strangers at the store told me to take his photo.  Which only encouraged him.

While there, Finley locked eyes with a woman.  She was heavy set and African American, and he raised his finger up to point at her.  My heart dropped and I started to sweat as my mind raced back to the time I was nannying and the little girl pointed out a heavy set woman and yelled, “Amy, look at that big, fat lady!!!”and my first thought was, How quickly can I run to Mexico right now.  Literally.

Finley is not known to be quiet or lack confidence, so whatever he was about to say following his finger pointing would be heard by all, and he opened his little mouth, eyes dead locked on the woman, “Mama!”

There was nothing I could do…nothing I could say to prevent whatever he had to comment on her…

“Mama….” this time a little louder,

“I think that’s Dada.”

“Oh Dada, huh?” I asked, I couldn’t stop laughing.

I think I still can’t.

This morning we read; “Who does she think she is?” The guests whispered.  “How dare she?”  So I asked the kids, “If we are very naughty, does Jesus still love us?”  Maria and Finley shook their heads no, Elijah shouted, “YEAH!”

“Elijah is right, God loves us even when we’re naughty, he wants us to come to him and let Him love us.”

Finley nodded in agreement, seriously but with a smirk, “When I’m naughty, I walk to womans.”

Daily squish love with Лёша.  I still can’t believe his patience, but I am glad.  Such a rad kitty.

And lastly, this sweet card Maria made for our friends.

Who are now a family of 5, from 2.

Have a great weekend!  There are so many wonderful things happening in the world right now!  Just normal people, changing lives for the better.  It’s so exciting!

xoxo

Has your child ever said something crazy to a stranger before that made you want to pass out–or sprint to Mexico?

Yes! In Home Depot Zenya saw a man with a big belly and chirped out “s’cuse me? Tee have a baby in there?” He went all pink and turned around. I don’t know who was more embarrassed. 😉

We were standing in line in the grocery store, behind a woman with a VERY large posterior, when my then 2 year old said very loudly “Mama, she has a big butt!” . I clamped my hand over his mouth and apologized with a very red face.

My oldest (at three) was upset that his dad had to take his baby sister out of a restaurant before us, and decided to yell “help! This lady is taking me!” as I tried to get him to leave when we were finished. Every. single. person. stopped to stare. Thankfully I didn’t get arrested!

Please never stop posting these snippet updates. They are awesome.

I don’t have kids yet, but at one point I had a classroom with 7 two-year-olds to myself all day, every day. Best quote happened when I was training one boy to use the toilet standing up. One of my girls came in to let me know she needed to go next, when she stopped, mouth agape, pointed, and said loudly “Is that his TAIL??” Unfortunately I was the only adult around to witness that gem, so I just changed the subject and went on with business, but I was laughing all day about that.

John was with Jesslan (about age 4)at a gymnastics class. As the instructor bent over Jesslan said loudly, “Papa, doesn’t Miss Robbie have a good butt?” There was not good way to answer that question!

I was sitting on a bench in a mall with my 3 – year – old Jesy when she focused in on the tattoos, multiple piercings, purple Mohawk, and spike – studded black leather clothing of a young woman who sat down on the bench across from us and lit a cigarette. Jesy stared at her, stared up at me, and turned back to the young woman again.

I held my breath as Jesy raised her arm to point and said in a loud voice: “If you smoke, you’ll DIE.”

The girl froze, looked hard at Jesy, then her face softened and she said: “That’s right, Honey. And don’t you ever start!”

That is so funny, but also sort of a sweet interaction. You are such an awesome mama! <3

Loving these stories! When my daughter was almost 3 she saw a man in the grocery store with an eye patch and yelled out (or at least it felt like she yelled out), “Mommy look, a pirate!” As I quietly told her it was not a pirate and we can talk about it in the car, she continued on to say, “Mommy, he IS a pirate, he has an eye patch and a beard! He IS a pirate mommy!” I couldn’t get out of the produce section fast enough!

Love your website! Could you tell me the name of the book you were reading to your little ones? I would like to use it in my Children’s Church classes.

  • LK March 26, 2014, 5:19 am

One of my close friends in grad-school only wore skirts/dresses according to her relgious beliefs. One evening she and I were babysitting her 3 year old nephew who looked up at her dead serious and asked “Why does Ms. LK wear boys pants”. (he meant typical jeans of course). I about died laughing. Of course, at his age he hadn’t been out beyond his family & church community very much to know better!

    I have two fun stories:
First, our family (with 6 kiddos), got a tour of the job place where daddy was hoping to get a job… we went in to meet his potential new boss. It went rather nicely… until we turned to leave his office and my 4 year old girl hangs behind us and gives his boss a gem of a smile and then points and says in a cheezy smiley voice “You don’t have any haaiiirrr” 🙂 Oh my. And yes, he still got the job.
Second, I went to menards with my son to return something. Just like any good customer service counter it had an extremely long line. As we were waiting, and I was chit-chatting with the customer in line in front of me… my newly potty trained son looked at all the customers behind us an promptly pulled down his shorts and said “LOOK!! I’ve got SUPER MAN underware!!”. Yup. 🙂
PS. I have been blessed by “back reading” your blog. I appreciate your heart, and your writing style. We’re in Minnesota so it’s fun to see you have family in MN.
