Cloth Diapering Part II

Alright, it’s time I finally put together the how-to for cloth diapering once your baby starts eating solid foods, cause let me tell you, it’s a game changer!

But look how dang cute a toddler can look in a bumGenius cloth diaper!
Check it out!

Same ones he’s worn since he was just weeks old.  That’s the power of one sized diapers that you can wash in your washing machine.

Part I of cloth diapering is so beyond easy, it’s silly to do anything else.  Part II, takes some adjustment, but once you get rolling, it becomes great as well.

*Disclaimer* I’ll be talking about poop here, so if you’re hear to read about cute kids or about adoption, click away, here try this!

Alright, so what happens when your baby starts eating solid foods?  Well, their poop starts to match.  And you can no longer get away with dropping your soiled diaper straight in the washing machine.  So the poop needs to come out, before you place your diaper into the diaper pail.

DON’T WORRY!  You don’t have to touch anything, because there is this awesome invention called, “The Diaper Sprayer!”  It’s a tiny little gadget that actually hooks onto the side of your toilet, and the steam of water is what get’s the poop off, not bad right?  Then flush away.  Sometimes, they will just fall out of the diaper and no need to spray.

We recommend this one, cause, well, it’s what we have, and it works great!  But whoa, it’s actually gone up in price a bit, so maybe I recommend this one.

Better yet, if you’re crafty, my friend has a tutorial for a DIY diaper sprayer that we totally would have done if we know about it before hand: DIY Diaper Sprayer.

Did I mention that cloth diapers also double as swim diapers?  No need to buy those expensive ones, or pack anything extra, which is great in summer time.  If you’re out and a about and the mood hits you to go to the splash park or the beach, you can just go because your sweetie is already wearing just what they need!

This picture is so funny

Seriously, cloth diapering is so much easier in so many ways.  Not to mention, it’s so good for the earth and your wallet.

I also want to recommend a diaper pail that we use that I think works great for cloth diapers because it has a wide mouth for the diapers, which is really important, and because it’s cheap!  This one.  We originally started out with the diaper champ, but it got frustrating trying to cram cloth diapers down the chute, this other one is ideal.

And we are still loving this reusable pail liner.  In fact, this thing is one of my favorite parts about cloth diapering!   So sturdy, so cute, so saves money, and no bags and bags of plastic in our oceans and landfills.  Win, win I say.

Ok, so here’s the break down:

Cloth Diapering Part II

1. Change your sweet baby/toddler’s diaper.

2. If it’s pee-pee, take out the insert, and place it all in the pail.

3.  If it’s poop, spray out the poop, remove insert and place it all in the pail.  (Spraying takes a couple times to get used to, remember to aim down 🙂 And be sure the seat is up before you spray.

4.  Wash as normal!

*Once in a while, once they are on solids, you’ll need to strip the diapers.*

Here’s an awesome video I wish Andrew and I made about how to know when to strip them:

And here’s a video on how to strip them.  We rarely do it, but it’s good info:

I cant commit to doing it but I am glad that it is so popular right now. There are so many upsides to it.

I am so glad mine are all way too old for daipers these days. This is definitely one thing I will never miss about my 3 being babies. However, I have found that as you clean up their poop less, they talk about it more, until they reach adolescence and then they suddenly stop overnight and if you happen to mention it, they become horrified….

Kids are weird things! Gotta love em though, and boy do I love mine.

    Have a wonderful weekend guys!

    Lou 🙂

Keiffer and I were cracking up at those videos!! Just today Keiffer was having “cheating thoughts” and wondering why our bathroom smells so bad of ammonia. Looks like it is time for some stripping 🙂 Thanks for sharing 🙂

Well, I can’t say that I have a whole lot of reasons to read up on cloth diapering, but I did enjoy the adoption story post that you linked to. Haha. 🙂

Haha, you never know, Chelsea, you will probably ne cloth diapering to pay for your adoptions sooner than you know! 😉

      Love,

this is so great! I was actually going to send you a personal message about this very subject! I think we now need to strip Luke’s diapers and there are so many websites and different ways to do it that I was going to get your expert opinion! Thank you so much Amy!

Great post! We’ve been cloth diapering our 2nd (4 months) and our first is using cloth at night, but is otherwise potty trained.
I’m glad I found your blog through the SD Mom Bloggers group!
