Love and Mercy

From and incredible post by Jen Hatmaker, please read in it’s entirety:

‘”I’m sick of the Jesus forwards and judgment. Sick of majoring on gay marriage. Enough, everyone. With every hate Tweet and finger jab and Bible bludgeon, you are telling my gay friends they are indeed unwelcome, unloved, unvalued, and uninvited. If your agenda is to battle homosexuality, how’s that going? How many gay folks read your Prop 8 yard sign, knocked on your door, and said, “Thank you for voicing your opinion to the neighbors in this manner. Would you kindly invite me in and teach me how to be straight? And do you have a Bible study I can join?”’

Another favorite excerpt from the many she wrote:

‘We love Jesus, who was always in hot water with the religious folks for eating with sinners and offering scandalous grace not just to the leper but to the tax collector.

We love people. Because Jesus does. All of them.

We love grace, because it rescued all of us sinners.

We love healing and redemption, and we get to be a part of that every day, if we are brave enough to say yes.

We love that Jesus uses broken people, because that is our zip code and He chooses us anyway. Mercy is our only sane option.’

Thank you Jen Hatmaker, I am now your fan.

Awesome. I was talking to a fellow school mum about this two days ago at our cute little Christian school. Who am I to even be worrying about this, gay marriage is being addressed here in Australia. You can imagine the bandwagon of objections this is creating…. Who are we? Jesus loved. xxx Thanks Amy xx

Amen sister! one of my uncles is gay and he is one of my favorite people in the whole world. i love him the way that he IS. period.

    Amen!
It’s so refreshing to see this from one of my favorite adoption blogs! I follow several and one thing never mentioned is the many, many gay singles and couples who foster and adopt kids who few typical straight couples would consider. It often starts because it’s so difficult for them to be chosen for a “healthy infant” but this dilemma grows into a passion for the hurting, unwanted orphan. I see this in my work, my church and community. It makes me sad that my gay friends (Christian and non-Christian) are often completely isolated from the rest of the adoption community.

Christina, yes, exactly. You took the words right out of my mouth.

( . . . took the words right from my fingertips? Some idioms translate poorly to the digital age . . .)

Awesome pretty much summed up all my feelings on the issue… and I’ve always stood by “We love people. Because Jesus does. All of them.”

Thank you- this post brought tears to my eyes. Can’t say that Ive heard this view from christian people- well not, the scripture quoting kind of you know what I mean:) I’m a lesbian adoptive mom, child psychologist, and passionate advocate of those with special needs. I’m a good person and I KNOW it, but hearing attacks on me and my community can still be painful and alienating. Thanks so much for speaking up.

I read this to my husband, and actually teared up. I am sorry you are alienated. It’s not ok. You deserve more, you are so loved. I hope in my heart people are just confused, on the brink of understanding what Jesus really means when he say what the greatest commandments are…

JLH, so much love to you. For whatever they’re worth, I offer virtual hugs, a bit of shared pain, guilt over my own passing-privilege, and my reassurances that no matter how ignorant far too many may be of the fact, your kids are truly blessed to have you for a mother. Fullstop.
