Weekend of Service

I guess you could say we go to a rather larger church.  We go to a satellite campus in Carlsbad, so it has a small church feel where you know people, and everyone knows your baby, and you don’t feel bad taking an extra doughnut.  But–still our church is still pretty huge.

Last week, the church shut it’s doors and did what we call, ‘The Weekend of Service.’  It’s where each member of the church leaves and becomes the church out in the community.  The motto is, “The Church has left the Building.”

Our small group went to a local elementary school and did some major painting and planting.  Those kids are gonna get a nose full of rosemary and flax scent as they strut into school.  It was a fun thing to do with all your friends on a Sunday afternoon in the sun, even though you might think it would be a drag, right?  The boys were cracking each other up as they dug holes and got dirty, and the girls chit-chatted as we planted or painted.  One of my friends works at that school and he said that Monday morning it looked amazing! Another friend of mine works at a school in Vista where our church revamped and she said her school is literally transformed.

(Here’s us hard at work.  The Tiny was pretty sleepy for most of the time, he was more moral support.  I know some people may think it’s weird to bring a baby to a service project but that is one of the main things Andrew and I prayed for while pregnant, that our baby would ‘join’ our life, not become our life, and that we wouldn’t stop serving God or being in the community because we have a child.  We prayed this all the time actually because we felt our hearts inclined to do the opposite.  We pray that through this we can help others, but as we strive to put God first, our little one will grow to know and serve Him too.  That’s the prayer at least…)

Altogether there were:

6,500 volunteer spots, every last spot filled.

185 projects

100 sites

6 different cities

Well over 1.5 million billable hours (Many companies just donated all the materials such as lumber, plants, cement, etc)

Schools, hospitals, shelters, nature areas, boys and girls clubs are some of the places that got ransacked with God’s love and people working their butts off for two fulls days pouring their time and love into making it awesome.

Here is a really great video of some of the sites.  I love what they did at Tri-City hospital  in the area for people post-op to go relax.  Fast forward to the 14:00 mark to to see it, and then again at 26 to see some quick before and afters of some of the sites–I love it!
(I know you probably won’t go click on the the video, but if you do you’ll be stoked because it is so cool and cause Chris is hilarious)

We were even in the news here.

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday. Our church does something similar called Servant Saturday. Your church’s was huge though! What a great impact on the community and a wonderful way to show and share Jesus’s love! And really, how wonderful to pray for your son before he was even born. It’s very nice to have met you! Have a wonderful week!
